Professional
After earning a degree in Environmental Studies from UCSB, I pursued graduate studies in Geography at SDSU. I completed my Master’s coursework and much of my thesis, which focused on hydrological modeling of nitrate concentrations in Rainbow, CA. Following grad school, I worked as a GIS Coordinator for a small environmental consulting firm for two years.
I then joined the City of San Marcos, CA, where I was tasked with building their GIS program from the ground up. Over my eight-plus years there, I developed their Enterprise GIS and contributed to all aspects of the program. After starting a family and seeking a more flexible schedule, I transitioned to part-time work with a consulting firm, primarily supporting the EPA. During that two-year period, I focused on geospatial technical writing.
Looking to return to hands-on GIS work, I began freelance consulting for a diverse range of clients, including environmental consultants, municipalities, and counties for the last 8 years. With over 20 years of experience in the GIS industry, I’ve cultivated a deep and comprehensive knowledge of this field.
Personal
Hi! In case you were wondering, my name is pronounced: "met-chuh". It's Dutch (although I'm Korean) and I was named after a family friend. I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, CA and currently reside in Encinitas, CA with my husband, 2 kids, and dog, Shermy. I love to bodyboard, snorkel, hike, bake, craft, and make beautiful things (including maps!). I'm also trying to learn how to play ukulele these days.
